Living The Life of O...really!
When I first heard of Robyn Okrant and her 365 day journey to O-ville I rolled my eyes - why on earth would I want to read about someone trying to live a life of an enigma (dolls I have my issues with the O but that's another post altogether). To my surprise Okrant's touching Living Oprah: My One-Year Experiment To Walk the Walk of the Queen of Talk (Center Street) was an enlightening tome from a woman who invested her time, money and marriage on the ideologies of Oprah (or rather Oprah's staff - again another post altogether). From her struggles to maintaining a sound mind (and not going bankrupt) while attempting to live her 'best life' Okrant discovered that living a life by her own design is what truly matters - it's an amazing read for O acolytes and those of us who just loves a really good book!

JL: I taught my first aerobics class when I was 16 years old so I’ve been in the fitness industry for over 25 years! Since then I’ve been involved teaching fitness classes, working at fitness clubs and doing personal training. My husband and I own two clubs in Calgary that have been operating since 1983. I was a competitive runner and got injured because of running too much! As a result, I had to weight train to help keep my weight off – I was skeptical about weight training because like many women, I was afraid of getting big and bulky. To gain motivation to lift weights, I went to an exercise physiologist to find out how many calories I could burn through weight training. Through testing the exercises on a metabolic cart, I discovered that many of the exercises (that I later chose for the Get Ripped!™ DVD’s) burn as many calories as running on a treadmill, if not more! I discovered that this was a great way to help people lose weight and boost their metabolism. From there, I put together only the top weight training and cardio exercises (the ones that would burn the most calories and help people get the most muscle definition) into a class and taught them at the Talisman center before putting them on a workout DVD. At the time, I wasn’t even thinking about turning the workouts into DVDs, it was just about teaching the most effective workouts for the class participants. The classes became an instant hit! When I taught my first one we had only 5 people but within weeks we ended up having about 150 – 175 per class. The Talisman center had to add more classes to accommodate the need. The classes became so popular that people would line up an hour before just to reserve a spot. As a result, many people were being turned away - which participants found quite frustrating! but, there was simply no room. One day, a lady came up to me and said “Jari, I wish you would put together the Ripped workouts on a video so that I can do the workouts at home – I just can’t get to the classes early enough to reserve a spot.” Through investigating with someone in the video industry I was given a quote of $1500. I thought that I could easily afford that. What he didn't tell me was that the $1500 was his cost only! As I dove deeper and deeper into the cost of shooting my first DVD workout, I ended up spending $35,000! It was then that my husband and I went into our savings. I was very worried about if I could make the money back - it felt like a HUGE risk and was the most stressful risk I had ever done.
2. Jari, you are truly a renaissance women - you've built a brand, changed lives and have amazing abs : - what keeps you motivated? What is your mantra?
JL: I have been overweight before. I have been dumped, cheated on, and made fun of due to the extra weight. I decided to get the weight off and make a change in my life. I thought that working at a Fitness club would be a very positive environment for me and it was a very positive experience. I was able to get the weight off and keep most of it off. It is really easy for me to put weight on – mainly due to genetics. So, I get motivated by remembering how I felt when I carried those extra pounds and what it did to me internally. I was so down on myself because I felt like a loss of control. For me, when the pants get a little too tight – I get motivated to drop those pounds by eating healthy and exercising. When you do those two things together you feel so much better about yourself and others. Working with thousands of clients it is amazing how extra weight dictates how we feel about ourselves. What I believe is that the fitness industry can be mostly about vanity. It often can be about having a great body and looking good – which if fine, but it focuses on the ‘me’ aspect of it. It is my ultimate goal to help others be the best that they can be so that they can help pay it forward and help others be the best that they can be. I am very passionate about fitness but more compassionate about people. For example, if a friend is going through a divorce and needs someone to talk to because they are hurting, I often will go for a walk with them and just listen instead of having the attitude of ‘that's not my problem.’ When you help others that are struggling – you feel better spiritually inside. I find this the most rewarding. This is why all of my life I have given back to those in need through charity and or donating my time to help others.
3. Besides your workout regime - what foods should people incorporate into their diet to lose weight?
JL: I really believe diet is 80 - 90% of the weight loss equation. People should really include lean proteins (chicken ,turkey, fish, tuna, and egg whites), raw veggies, fruits and whole grains - really all those high fiber foods that help you stay full all day long.
4. We are all affected by the economic crisis - with so many people forgoing the gym; what do you suggest the masses do to stay fit?
JL: Here are my best tips for staying motivated to keep fitness an important part of your life at all times:
* Be clear: the first step in making sure our efforts are well spent is to have clear values that translate into specific goals and objectives. A good way to accomplish this is to keep an exercise journal or write down from the outset what kind of goals you want to accomplish.
* Live creatively and avoid getting stuck in a rut: exercise plateaus happen when your body adapts to the exercise. Keep your program fresh by circulating exercises and introducing new movements so as to not fall into a rut that can zap your motivation
* Be a learner: in order to stay motivated, constantly learn about new things you can try out. Not only will this help you avoid a plateau, but the new knowledge will pull you in new directions you can experience.
* Seek a mentor: someone to look up to with exercise is crucial as it can help you get motivated both for the day's exercise and to redefine yourself as a whole. A mentor is someone that can be trusted for their honesty and wisdom, and they will help push you right in the right direction when you falter.
* Be organized: exercise takes effort, so make sure you don't give yourself options to quit by planning your exercises in advance and writing them down in a calendar or datebook.
* Stay in touch with your emotions: your body will let you know when it is time to exercise and time to rest. Pay attention to your energy levels, your mood and your psychological state for clues as to what to do next.
* Exercise is cheap: you don't necessarily need to go to an expensive gym. Running outside is virtually free and can be an excellent way to get away from it all while improving yourself.
* Remember exercise relieves stress, which is high for most people right now: During your exercise program, really focus on yourself and your body, ignoring all the external complications. For that period of time, the outside world doesn't exist. Lastly, exercise is something we NEED and not something that we want. It is during stressful times that we need to exercise more often. Stress is the number 1 killer!
5. What are your fail proof moves to ensure a killer physique for the impending bikini season?
JL: All of the exercises from the Get Ripped!™ series are effective. My personal favorite workout is Extremely Ripped!™ 1000, that includes classic cardio intervals and double duty strength exercises in there. What was interesting, was that when we tested the exercises on the metabolic cart (which tests how many calories and carbs you burn), I burned 2 calories per minute with a bicep curl, but when I did a bicep curl with a bent knee deadlift, I burned around 7 calories! On all the Get Ripped!™ exercise tracks, we show you how many calories you will burn, which is such a great motivator for people trying to shape up.
6. La Petite Blog has an affinity for fashion - and we have noticed your uber cute looks featured on your DVDs what collections do your wear when your working out?
JL: I designed them all with a gal here in Calgary. I couldn’t get sponsors for the workout DVD’s so I figured I would design them and get them custom made myself. I wanted them to be different that what people are used to seeing.
7. You have an illustrious career - what should we expect from Jari Love for 2010?
JL: Currently, I am getting ready for a three week tour in the United States to promote Extremely Ripped!™ 1000 as it became a favorite hit with Fitness Magazine! I am also promoting my newest release called “Body Rock” which incorporates dance and cardio with an effective weight workout at the end. I am also currently working on a diet book which I hope to have completed by Spring. It will be available on the jarilove.com. I am also releasing a Latin workout later in the year and filming more Get Ripped!™ workouts.
